:: GREAT DANE RESCUE REPORTS 2008 ::

April 2008

Things got a little busy there for a while and it was sad to see that there were several  requests from very reluctant owners who had no choice but to re home their Danes. These Great Danes are young, much loved, well cared for and well socialised. As a result, they were relatively easy to find new families for and I thank their previous owners for that. Circumstances change and I understand how difficult it was for some to ask for help. Believe me, it is a much better alternative than putting your loved companion into a shelter.

In the previous report I had mentioned Emily, the old blue girl who was in dire straits. Her owner became desperate and dropped her off at her local pound, the same day a new owner was going to pick her up! Big panic, many phone calls and Emily was out of there and on her way to share Barb and Matthew's home where she has settled in brilliantly and is getting all the vet care, love and attention she missed out on all these years. Sidney and Bettina were in trouble after attacking a neighbour's livestock and needed to find a home in a more suburban setting. Sadly, while waiting for re homing, Sidney injured himself irrepairably and had to be 'sent to God'. Bettina fretted badly and her owners decided she had suffered enough and decided to keep her, taking whatever measures will be necessary to make sure she never wanders again.

Herc and Horus are two delightful, young Great Danes who were very easily re homed when their owners were unable to care for them any longer. Both Danes had been well cared for, socialised and trained and as a result are enjoying life at their new homes - Herc near Batemans Bay and Horus near Penrith. Many thanks to all who made this transition so easy.

Poppy is also a delightful, young and much loved pup who was having problems settling into her new home in Sydney after moving from Perth. After much agonising, her owners decided on a home for her, but when faced with the reality of Poppy leaving their care, couldn't bear it and decided to keep her. I wish them the very best in the future and hope that Poppy learns to become a Sydneysider soon! Jet is an energetic, young Great Dane as well and needed to find a home when a young member of his family was diagnosed with a serious illness and could not be near dogs. Thank you to Hildydane Kennels for boarding Jet until a new family could be found. Jet is settling in well and I am told he's behaving himself better than when he was boarding! Naughty boy.

Still in need of a home is a charming older blue gentleman called Bruce who is located in Queensland. Bruce is dignified and very well behaved and very much an indoor Dane used to the luxuries that all Danes should have! If you are able to give him a home in the style to which he has been accustomed to, please contact me.

After several years, I will be leaving  this rescue in someone else's hands. My family, my Danes and my home are in need of more attention from me and I find breed club issues very taxing. I wish the Eastern & Coastal Region of NSW Great Dane Club Rescue all the best for the future and that of our Danes.

February 2008

Phew! Survived the Christmas dumping season, which was a strange one because it got busier AFTER Christmas than before!  Go figure.

Firstly, I had an update on Max who has settled in so well with Ida and family, and has especially bonded with the other rescue Dane they have, Sasha. We have before and after pictures going out in our newsletter and it's like looking at two different Danes.  Just wonderful and heartwarming as always.

Emma and no-name (ended up being Olive) have happy stories too.  Emma was found a lovely home by the RSPCA in Rutherford and has another Dane friend to live with.  Olive's owners decided after much agonising (and several great potential owners being turned away) that they would persevere with her and keep her for the time being.  As they are selling their property, they are hoping to move into a fenced property next time.  Fingers crossed for Olive as she sounds like a very sweet girl.

Toby's owners wanted him re homed because they are expecting a second baby and they felt he was too clumsy around their first child. As with Olive, they also decided to spend more time with him and keep him as they couldn't bear to part with him.  Let's hope that also works out for him.

Indy is a two year old fawn girl who's owners felt she needed a quieter home without very boisterous children around her all the time.  She was intimidated by them and was getting a little snappy. Thank you to a wonderful man Philip, who had recently lost his 12 year old Great Dane and was in need of  a Dane to love and spoil.  Perfect home! Indy has been with Philip for nearly two weeks now and is settling in well.

Emily is in urgent need of a good home.  She is an old girl who was rescued from a very neglectful home by a lady who can't really afford to look after her properly.  Her photos show her to be a very beautiful old girl (Emily is eight years old), blue and in pretty good condition.  Please, if anyone is prepared to give an old girl a quiet and loving home, please contact me asap.  She deserves the best.

Sidney and Bettina  live on the NSW/VIC border and have been getting into trouble with the neighbours by chasing livestock.  They are very sweet Danes, bombproof with humans but need to go to a home without horses, goats, sheep, cattle, bunnies, etc. This is also an urgent situation as the neighbours are threatening litigation.  Please ring me if you can help.

Next month I will begin to tell you the long and sorry saga of a sweet girl named Duchess, who is victim of the greatest ignorance and miscarriage of justice by a Council that I have heard in a long while. Watch this space.
